If Ferrari, Ford, Porsche, or any other automaker that hates car flippers so much wants to actually do something about it, then they should put their big boy panties on and manufacture enough units to satisfy demand. Same with dealers charging over sticker. I cannot comprehend the logic of “We built this car (911R, Ford GT, Civic Type R, etc.) for enthusiasts so we don’t want people flipping them for a quick profit. Oh, but we only built 250 of them.” Fuck outta here.

It’s still a gorgeous car though.

Ford should’ve auctioned off the first one to charity like companies always do with special cars like that

The artificial scarcity is pathetic.

Ford can’t possibly predict demand on a car like this. What they need to do instead is offer several model years till demand dies.

It’s all part of the game...both sides, all sides...

Related - saw my very first new GT in the wild just a couple days ago - black with a gold stripe. Damn it’s low... but those flying buttresses!

Agree to a certain point the Type R shouldn’t be any kind of restricted demand, Honda should just outright say “we will produce to demand”. That would avoid a lot of the ADM. I mean there are only so many people looking for a $35k civic. Same argument for the 911 R. Now the GT should be limited that’s a car ford should revere and production should show that

I’ll be honest with you; I don’t really agree that Ford should limit production of the GT. It’s a car, and I would think that if I built something that I was really proud of, I’d want as many people as possible to experience it. However, if they must limit the production than they should set the price at what the market will bear. I hate the purity tests they do to determine allocation.

However, at the end of the day, it’s their business and they can sell their products however they wish. I just think it’s disingenuous to complain about and sue car flippers when it was your own pricing strategy that created the opportunity in the first place.

They’re actually not required to do anything by anyone. They’re well within their right to sell as many or as few as they want and set whatever terms and conditions in the sales contracts they draw up. Don’t like the terms? Buy something else, then.

I agree on pricing what the market will bear. I think they inflated the value with their selection process but I still think they should limit production. To me limiting production not only means owners are happier with better resale but it preserves the essence of what this kind of car is for. Brand recognition. If Ford built as many as possible they would have the Corvette problem, yeah sure it’s the pinnacle of the brand but when Bob, Sue and Johnny all have one on the same block it loses a little luster.

I’m not clear on what the law will or will not allow as enforceable in a contract, but my personal opinion is that if you buy something and you pay in full for it, then it should be yours. The person who sold it to you doesn’t own it anymore, and they have fuck all say in what you do with it. If you want to part out your GT on Craigslist, that should be your right.

exclusivity is good for the brand in that it builds allure and it promises that “investors” in a product can have confidence that the product will remain at high value by virtue of its rarity. not to mention that its crazy stupid expensive to build these and much of the production is done out of factory which means they have to contract for a set number of parts/builds in advanced. It’s like this - they print X number of books, you either get a first run or you don’t but they have to print in runs because its not an on demand product. They may do another run or they may decide its untenable to do it for whatever reason.

“You should always build one less car than the market demands” – that was Enzo Ferrari’s sales philosophy and it’s one that has served the company well over the decades, helping to maintain the brand’s inestimable mystique.

Ford, Porsche, McLaren, etc. are just taking one out of the master’s book for their unobtainiumobiles.

Can Ford really even enforce the contract? I know they were trying to sue Cena, dont’ know if anything came out of that. I mean, once you purchase it, it’s no longer Ford’s car and the owner can do what they want with it.
